Speaker Test (Left / Right)

Play a tone on one side at a time to check your speakers or headphones.

Pick a side to play a short tone

It starts quiet. Turn your volume down first.

Goes from a low hum to a very high pitch over 8 seconds. Keep the volume low.

How to test

  1. Turn your volume down first. The tone starts quiet.
  2. Press Left. The tone should come from the left side only.
  3. Press Right, then Both.
  4. Raise the test volume slowly if you can’t hear it.

If the sound comes from the wrong side

Headphones may be on backwards, or the speakers may be plugged in or placed the other way round. If both sides play when you press Left, look for a mono audio setting in your system’s sound or accessibility settings.

About the rising tone

The rising tone sweeps from 40 Hz to 16,000 Hz. Small speakers get quiet at the lowest part, and the very top can be faint or unpleasant, so a quiet start or end is not a fault by itself. Keep the volume low.

Questions

I hear nothing. Is the speaker broken?

Check the system volume and which output device is selected first. Then raise the test volume slider a little and press the button again.

How loud is the test tone?

It starts at one tenth of full scale, and the slider stops at half of full scale, so the page itself never plays at maximum level.

Why can’t I hear the highest part of the rising tone?

Small speakers and many headphones get quiet at the very top, and not everyone hears the highest pitches. That alone does not mean a fault.
