How to test

  1. Press Test my mic and allow the microphone when your browser asks.
  2. Speak. The bar should move with your voice.
  3. Press Record 5 seconds, then play it back to hear how you sound.
  4. Press Stop when you are done. Leaving the page also turns the mic off.

If the browser says the mic is blocked

The message under the button tells you where the block is. If this site is blocked, use the lock or settings icon in the address bar to allow the microphone, then press the button again.

If the system is blocking it, open Windows 11 Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone, or on a Mac System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone, and allow your browser. Names vary a little between versions.

Where the sound goes

The level meter and the recording are made inside this tab. A recording stays in memory until you record again, press Delete recording or close the tab. It is not sent to us.

How the level is shown

The bar shows loudness on the scale digital audio uses, from silence up to the loudest value it can store (0 dBFS). We say the mic picks up sound once the level passes −45 dBFS. That line is this site’s own rule.

Questions

Can I hear myself live?

Use Record and then play it back. Playing the mic straight to the speakers would loop back into the mic on most laptops, so this test plays a recording instead.

The bar moves but people on my call can’t hear me. What now?

The mic works in this browser. Check that the meeting app is using the same microphone, and that you are not muted there.

Is my voice uploaded?

No. There is no upload step and no server that receives audio.
